It’s a bold move to call your work timeless, even bolder to do it with an album that is released into a burning world, loud with the cacophony of wailing agents, war, and change. In a time when there is more hyperbole than substance, few things imprint beyond the moment, especially when there isn’t a lot of promotion, mainstream features, or machinations. Kaytranada puts his sound out and cuts across the commotion.
Long known for making dance music, remixes, and the kind of songs that just make parties fun, Timeless doesn’t stray from this format, as it opens with energy. Durand Bernarr, Charlotte Wilson, and Anderson Paak are included in the alumni that return to make infectiously fun songs. Confidence pulses through the veins of every fret, stanza and clef, matching the punchiness of the beats in a way that invigorates you as you flow from track to track. Even the sultry songs project a level of sensuality that doesn’t beg or plead, but convinces you to come along.
There are twenty-one tracks, and 63 minutes of music in total. My top three are Still, Weird, and Hold On but throughout the project Kaytranada sticks to his formula of using independent and less-well-known artists. Be clear, this enhances rather than detracts from the experience because it’s not predictable or routine. The only surprising flaw is the poor transitions and mixing between tracks. Given that Kaytranada is a DJ, and the world of possibility that opened up with lossless audio, this is an unexpected faux pas. Aside from this minor error it’s an album to get excited about for summer.
If you’ve got the time, put on Age of Pleasure or Jaguar II first, and let either one play through. Then listen to Timeless. You’ll hear it.
